MINED SCAPE, A Mined Landscape

The Chungnam Provincial Park Golf Clubhouse proposes a new setting for recreational sports, drawing on the memory of the former Gubong Mine and the recovering natural landscape. The lines and planes of the cut slopes remaining on the site inform the building’s siting and section, while changes in elevation connect the arrival spaces, clubhouse, and park golf course. A place once devoted to resource extraction is transformed into a setting for exercise, rest, and social interaction.

Connecting the Memory of Place with Space

The traces of the mine serve as a basis for organizing new spaces. The “Miners’ Path,” leading from the parking area to the clubhouse, incorporates an exhibition on the history of Gubong Mine, allowing visitors to encounter the site’s memory as they approach the building. Inspired by mine tunnels, the internal circulation spaces connect the programs on both floors with the outdoor plaza, linking memories of the past with present-day spatial experiences.

Carrying the Flow of the Terrain into Architecture

The roof form reflects the ridgelines of Gubongsan Mountain and the contours shaped by mining. Extended eaves embrace entrances, terraces, and outdoor courtyards, serving as both sunshades and canopies. The building’s terrain-responsive siting and horizontal silhouette harmonize with the surrounding landscape, while courtyards and gaps between spaces draw natural light and breezes into the interior. The timber structure, combined with stone, wood, and metal, expresses the relationship between the mine’s memory and the new architecture through materials and structure.

Connecting Exercise, Rest, and Social Interaction

The first floor provides convenient access to the park golf course through the Starting Lounge and supporting facilities, while the second floor connects educational, dining, and senior health and fitness facilities. The double-height Starting Lounge provides a place to gather and wait before and after play, while the senior health and fitness facilities connect to an outdoor wellness courtyard, extending activities between indoors and outdoors. The restaurant and terraces open toward views of the park golf course and Guryongcheon Stream. As a shared setting for park golf players and local residents, the clubhouse becomes a place where everyday life and personal memories become part of the mined landscape.

A Health-Focused Community That Embraces the Stories of the Neighborhood

Previously housed within the Western Office of the Gyeongsangnam-do Provincial Government, the Jinju Public Health Center relocates to the northernmost edge of the emerging Chojeon urban district, across Worasan-ro. A catalyst for public health. A new community park for the emerging district. Going beyond healthcare, it creates a community centered on health that brings the city and its residents together.

The side facing the provincial government complex responds to the urban context, while the side facing residents provides a green healing environment at a human scale. The center establishes a new realm of public health where residents’ well-being and nature come together.

Designed to engage with the street, the center becomes an everyday guardian of health, accompanying residents on their journey home from the bus stop.

Site Planning

The building presents a clear frontage toward Worasan-ro, the main road, while opening toward and embracing the neighborhood. At the front, the public health center establishes its identity as the focal point of the health community. At the rear, the Dementia Care Center occupies a quieter, more private area. To support a rapid response to infectious diseases, the screening clinic is positioned for convenient vehicle access and provided with a dedicated access route.

Interior Planning

The design incorporates an adaptable system that responds to changing circumstances, including pandemics, and prioritizes open spaces that support physical distancing and natural ventilation. A three-dimensional spatial organization responds to the distinct functions of the public health center and screening clinic, while a clear separation between active and quiet areas maximizes spatial efficiency.

The public health center and Dementia Care Center are connected through nature. Courtyards, elevated garden decks, terraces, and rooftop gardens provide places for users to rest. A light well extending from the ground floor to the roof opens the interior to daylight, while natural ventilation refreshes the air.

A Cultural Production Hub

A new city emerges from the urban development plan accompanying the relocation of the provincial government. People and culture gather here. Previously dispersed arts organizations come together to produce culture, while people gather to experience and consume it. Through this cycle of cultural production and consumption, the place becomes a cultural hub encompassing the nature, history, cities, arts, culture, and education of Gyeongsangbuk-do.

Zones: An Assemblage of Fragments

Distinct zones, each with its own character, come together to form a collective whole. Rather than a single volume or building, the project engages with the city through a three-dimensional composition of these zones. Each facility is arranged spatially according to the distinct characteristics of its discipline and organically connected to others through shared spaces.

A Cultural Hub in Harmony with Nature

Paths connect, framed by courtyards and trees that shape the outdoor spaces. People gather along the paths, beneath the trees, in the courtyards, and at the outdoor performance venue. This open cultural space brings nature and the city together, creating a cultural landscape in harmony with its natural surroundings.

A Metonymic Evocation of Traditional Architecture

Just as the layered framework of Mandaeru Pavilion at Byeongsan Seowon holds views of the surrounding landscape, the horizontal bands of the façade unify the different zones while presenting framed views to the city. Through an assemblage of lines, planes, and zones, the design seeks a contemporary reinterpretation of traditional architecture.

The Baesanimsu Landscape of Bonghwangsan Mountain and Songpyeongcheon Stream

Situated between Bonghwangsan Mountain and Songpyeongcheon Stream, the site embodies baesanimsu—the traditional setting of a mountain behind and water in front. Its sense of place offers a foundation for envisioning the future of Gyeongsangbuk-do, drawing on the architecture of seowon as a philosophical source. These Confucian academies exemplified a life devoted to self-cultivation and study in harmony with nature, grounded in the traditional Korean scholarly ethos of humility and restraint.

This land holds the memory of such history and culture. Our design begins with making room for culture through a distilled simplicity achieved by subtraction and opening up space.

A Library That Builds Dreams

Kkumaetteul Sejong Municipal Children’s Library creates “a landscape enriched by books” within Mogaetteul Park in Sejong. Engaging with the nearby Marutteul Daycare Center, the design explores movement from inside to outside and outside to inside. Its layout and massing open in multiple directions, while its spaces blend into the park, presenting the image of a forest library in harmony with nature. Embodying the concept of a library that builds dreams, the design allows reading, play, creative work, and other activities to unfold naturally, establishing a distinct identity for Sejong Municipal Children’s Library.

Adding Dreams-Adding Spaces

Small, single-story volumes scaled to children harmonize with the park. Their combination and transformation create indoor and outdoor spaces that offer children diverse spatial experiences. Courtyards serve as transitional spaces between reading rooms, while folding doors, raised timber platforms, and maru (wooden-floored spaces) allow indoor and outdoor spaces to extend into one another.

Multiplying Dreams-Multiplying Views

The interwoven volumes create varied sectional configurations, offering continuous visual connections and dynamic spatial experiences that encourage creative activities. Through massing that evokes children growing as they build their dreams, the library aspires to become a new landmark for Sejong.

Sharing Dreams-Sharing Fun

The library seeks to coexist harmoniously with its surroundings. Distinctive outdoor spaces encourage a variety of children’s activities and are envisioned as venues for events such as secondhand book markets and book exhibitions.

The site occupies a pivotal and symbolic position, with the potential to revitalize the old city center by bringing the local community together. The project aims for urban regeneration that respects Jinju’s historical and cultural context while seeking new value. Guided by the concept of RE-GENERATION, the Sangsang Care Center supports residents’ daily lives and neighborhood regeneration. Under the concept of RE-CREATION, the Central Commercial District Sangsang Center and Jinju Remaker Center create value by revitalizing the local economy. RE-MAKE VALLEY connects these functions to form the Jinju Sangsang (商相) Remake Center, fostering a mutually supportive relationship with the local community.

Sharing Imagination—Outdoor Spaces Responding to the Surrounding Context

The Remake Center seeks to coexist harmoniously and thrive together with the surrounding community. Passages formed between the segmented lower-level volumes physically connect the markets and the city, extending pedestrian routes and improving accessibility. These connections create a streetscape that responds to the urban scale of the surrounding markets and engages organically with the building’s interior. In addition to enabling visual interaction, these spaces are intended to accommodate diverse activities and events, including food courts and flea markets.

Adding Imagination—Interior Spaces Supporting Diverse Interactions and Spatial Expansion

The Jinju Remaker Center is planned as a vibrant space that encourages entrepreneurship, particularly among young people. Through varied sectional configurations, the coworking space offers continuous interaction and dynamic spatial experiences that encourage creative activities. The shared kitchen, food court, and digital promotional gallery face RE-MAKE VALLEY, with folding doors allowing indoor and outdoor spaces to extend into one another. The Sangsang Care Center and upper-level parking areas provide user convenience through efficient, functional floor plans.

Multiplying Imagination—Massing and Façades Reflecting History and a Sense of Place

The design seeks to preserve the memory of Jinju Sangmusa’s history and traditions. Sangmusa’s architectural elements, characterized by the understated yet graceful beauty of traditional Korean hanok architecture, are given a contemporary expression in the façade design. We believe that RE-MAKE VALLEY, combining warm, familiar timber with the high-tech character of metal, will become a new landmark for Jinju, carrying tradition forward while expressing the city’s aspirations for future growth.

A Design Responding to the Urban and Historical Context

The histories of Seongnam’s old city center and new town meet and intertwine. A frame symbolizing Namhansanseong Fortress, a foundation of Seongnam’s history, acts as a metonym for the city’s history while representing a future yet to be shaped.

An Urban Paradigm Shift Rooted in History and the Restoration of Publicness

The design restores the site’s forgotten sense of place, regenerating it as a space centered on citizens.

Massing That Creates Voids to Be Filled with History

Rather than forming a single solid block, the massing that symbolizes history opens up in response to the surrounding context and needs. On this site, where the histories of the old city center and new town meet, visitors experience the city and its history firsthand.

Exhibition Spaces for Sequential Exploration and Individual Choice

The exhibition layout accommodates both sequential exploration and individual choice through intersecting spaces and circulation between indoors and outdoors. The exhibition spaces serve as both a record and a window, leading Seongnam from its historical origins toward the future.

A Site Plan Embracing Seongnam’s History and Future

The design envisions a history museum open to both the city and the park. Connecting the main entrance on the south side with the entrance plaza on the north side establishes a flow of pedestrian movement.

Seongnam History Museum: Preserving the City’s History

The museum seeks to remember the lives of Seongnam’s citizens, who made their homes on uneven terrain, each on an equally sized plot of just over 20 pyeong—approximately 66 m²—and to preserve the legacy they created here.

Healing Contour

The Courtyard: Opening Up a New Healing Environment

The project’s vision is to expand the hospital and improve its spatial organization, redefining its role from a facility focused on specialized care for geriatric conditions to a public general hospital in response to changing conditions, including global outbreaks of infectious disease.

The design concept, “Healing Contour,” unfolds a new healing environment throughout the indoor and outdoor spaces, centered on a transformed courtyard. Six key design strategies support this concept.

1. Specialized Healthcare Services to Establish the Identity of a General Hospital

The extension and remodeling secure the necessary floor area and improve the hospital’s overall organization to support its role as a general hospital.

-Remodeling to improve healthcare functions.

-Securing the required additional floor area to the greatest extent possible.

2. Healing Spaces for a Comfortable Environment

This is the central spatial strategy of Healing Contour. The existing courtyard’s total area is retained while its spaces are subdivided, raised, and rearranged to create a spacious shared lobby beneath. At the same time, connections with the nearby park create a stepped-down sequence of healing spaces that brings nature into the indoor and outdoor environments.

-Creating an environmentally friendly atrium and courtyard.

-Connecting outdoor exercise therapy spaces with rooftop gardens.

-Providing natural ventilation and daylight.

3. Circulation Designed Around User Characteristics

As part of the hospital’s transition to a general hospital, the emergency department is relocated to B1 along the road at the front of the site to fulfill the functions of a local emergency medical center. A separate, dedicated core provides direct upward access from the emergency department to the negative-pressure isolation ward, enabling a rapid response while supporting infection prevention.

-Reorganizing the main entrance circulation on B1.

-Providing a dedicated outpatient circulation core.

-Directly connecting the emergency department and negative-pressure isolation ward.

4. Outdoor Spaces Optimized for the Updated Healthcare Functions

At least one outdoor resting space is provided on every floor. The existing ground-floor entrance deck is landscaped as Sunlight Plaza, a place for rest. The deck is extended to connect directly with the ecological park on the right. Openings in the deck bring daylight to the B1 entrance, creating a brighter arrival environment.

-Connecting with the healing ecological park.

-Using the deck as an outdoor resting space.

5. Exterior Design Expressing the Identity of a General Hospital

The design pursues a refined architectural expression that conveys the reliability and solidity of a general hospital. Areas of existing cladding are designated for removal to accommodate the extension and redefine the building’s frontage. Double-skin louvers are incorporated into the three volumes as a unifying design element, establishing a new general hospital identity through architectural unity and symbolic expression.

Louver density and angles are adjusted according to orientation and the character of the interior spaces, creating an environmentally responsive façade designed to provide solar shading and reduce heat loads.

-A refined design expressing architectural unity.

-An environmentally responsive façade.

6. Phased Remodeling for Medium- and Long-Term Growth

Above all, construction is planned in phases to avoid disrupting hospital operations. Developed in close consultation with relevant specialists, the five-stage plan proceeds in the following order:

(1)Adding two floors above the inpatient wing.

(2)Constructing the rehabilitation center.

(3)Extending the outpatient department.

(4)Completing the extension through structural reinforcement.

(5)Completing the remodeling works in sequence.

-Establishing a phased construction plan that accommodates ongoing hospital operations.

-Supporting medium- and long-term growth in line with the hospital’s functions.

Having protected the lives of the city’s inhabitants for some 600 years, Hanyangdoseong itself becomes the essence of the site’s sense of place. Originally built to protect Seoul, the wall is both an object of remembrance and a unique form of infrastructure supporting the site’s regeneration as a new civic space. It shifts from a wall that guards to a wall that brings people together, completing a narrative within a broader context.

We propose minimal interventions that offer a place to pause within the flow of time. To respect the memories inscribed in the site and the traces of life it holds, existing facilities are preserved as far as possible, while elements that obscure the essence of the place are decisively removed. Minimal additions respond to and integrate with the existing site.

Our proposal centers on restoring relationships rooted in the site’s memory and regenerating it as a place for encounter and interaction. Through “memory experienced here and now,” the design revives the memories of the city wall embedded throughout the observatory, creating a place where visitors can etch the city and its history into their hearts. The terrain, carved into recesses to accommodate people’s activities, together with the openness of the park, holds the site’s greatest potential. Avoiding excessive physical structures, the design uses minimal interventions to revive and evoke the memory of the place.

Inscribing Time and People (時·人) into the Site

At the observatory, each person writes a poem of their own.
Our proposal is a prelude (序詩),
and each person goes on to shape a sense of place through their own memories.

Ephiphyte is a plant that grows harmlessly upon another plant or stone, and derives its moisture and nutrients from the air, rain, and sometimes from debris accumulating around it. The term epiphyte derives from the Greek epi- (meaning 'upon') and phyton (meaning 'plant').

Ephiphyte Seoul means an air-city that is connected via elevated decks and bridges like Seunsangga. Seunsangga has been a mega-structure that sits on the existing city with minimal connection to the city fabric, and disconnects the existing path. The idea of epiphyte is required in the situating Seunsangga as a renewed device that can interconnect the underdeveloped surrounding area and eventually restructure the implanted Modern urbanism of Seoul. This plan proposes a connective nature and culture in revitalizing Seunsangga deck based on “Ephiphyte” concept to create a walkable city.

Epiphytized nature is a rehabilitation of nature between Jongmyo and Namsan with the east 3rd floor deck. The broken decks were revived to interconnect Namsan and Jongmyo with landscaped path that enables urban stroll for all citizens. The east nature-deck houses nature that rehabilitates the whole 1.2 km deck with slow walks.

Epiphytized culture is a rehabilitation of sub-culture of custom manufacturing industry with the existing path and 3rd floor deck in the west of Seunsangga. The west culture-deck invigorates the small industry culture inside Seunsangga and the west area and enlivens “Start-up” young generation.

Epiphyte Seoul with enlivened Seunsangga will work as a platform for a new form of culture, industry, and nature in the walkable city.

EPIPHANY: A moment of sudden and great revelation. Our scheme proposes a place remembering the past, healing the present and securing future salvation. For this purpose, we returned to the origin of religion, taking motif from the forms of the early Christian sanctuary. The colonnades, cross, and the flowing circulation of pilgrimage form the basis of the scheme. The cathedral of martyrdom and piazza conceal themselves below the soil. Only the little chapel reveals itself on the ground to disclose the historical axis between Yak-hyun Church and Sungrae-Gate, and the temporal axis that pervades the site deeply. The little chapel is a chantry that would be open to those who are in need of pray and will work as a beacon to acknowledge the martyrdom and placeness of the site.

-The Terrain of this site is our Memories.

A Bizzare Terrain_ Memories from the industrial era into the cultural era

The oil tank depot, formed on Maebong mountain in 1976, was established to address the national crisis of the industrial era. The terrain deformed for the special function, with its empty tanks, now contains much potential to be a platform for people to re-engage with their new history and cultural developments. This proposal aims to make a cultural context through the device to experience the terrain. The tanks are part of the topography and become a flexible space to produce memories of the future.

This bizzare terrain remembers the transition from the industrial era into the cultural era. People face memories in their own specific ways when they are exposed to unfamiliar places.

Memories of individuals would form part of holistic narratives and larger contexts through the sharing of memories at the site.

Cultural Pods and Ecological Stripes
Like the ecological pods in the forest for animals and plants, the ‘cultural pods’ would be dispersed in the new home for cultural events. Shaped by a set of typological instruments, they are deployed on the site along with the various paths which take the role of ecological stripes. The cultural pods have the properties of connection, expansion, occupancy, penetration, floating, and markers, while the ecological stripes create a network connecting the cultural pods, the tanks, and nature.

-Terrain discovered through Experience

The topographic experience of the existing oil tank depot becomes the core of sense of place. The terrain itself, deformed to hide and protect the tanks, is the object of memory and becomes an infrastructure to rehabilitate the oil tank depot into a cultural depot park.
Cultural programs are arranged with the ‘cultural pods’ of different types, responding to the topography including the tanks. Visitors are led to experience the topography in the park with the ‘cultural pods’ operating flexibly with a variety of activities.

Tank filled with Memories

Minimizing excessive physical facilities, 'cultural pods' like decks, bridges and pavilions provide connections between the tanks and the outside and regenerate the memories of the place.

A projective revelation of water and light into the tanks provides a paradoxical suggestion of former oil storage facilities on the site.

A set of the 'cultural pods' customized for programs of each tank, propose the programmatic arrangement of entry levels, access paths, and natural elements.

We propose an augmented science museum that evolves like robotics itself—from industrial robots, through humanoids, to soft robotics. To this end, we develop an algorithm to optimize daylight and views and use it to inform the design. Drawing on the concept of soft robotics, we propose organic spaces and a breathing façade.

The concept of robotic construction also informs our approach to bricks, an analog material traditionally laid by hand. We propose fabricating them from lightweight organic composite material and assembling them using a digital manufacturing system.
